Judy

My wife Chikako was on the phone with her mother, "Judy." I decided to see if I could write her something before they hung up. It came together perfectly. I have only known Judy for a short time, hence the short length of the piece. She also reminds me of my own mother, who's life was very short.

The mood of the piece reflects a recent and most profound conversation with Judy, about the elusive nature of God. We seem to turn to him only in times of dire need. We wonder: "where are you lord? Why has this happened to me?" We wonder but we wander, if that makes sense. We say we want him to "take control," but it is usually US that wants control, and we just want his help taking it. But it is he who should be in control. It's tough to put him first, though, especially before those we love here on earth. It is tough to "let go and let God."

That is the scope of the piece. It is impossible to find the beat (without looking at the music :), and the mood is elusive as well. Happy chords give way to sadness, and "control" in the harmony is only lost to the constantly changing rhythm, etc. This represents the elusive nature of God, or perhaps better put, our elusive nature towards him...
